Review: 'The Art of Star Wars: The Last Jedi' (2017) Aut. Phil Szostak

Updated: Aug 10, 2020

The Senior Content and Asset Specialist at Lucasfilm Ltd, Phil Szostak, brings together another collection of concept art charting the next chapter in the 'Skywalker Saga' with 'Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi'.

The sequel to 2015s 'The Force Awakens' was met with nothing but mixed acclaim and abstain by fans and critics; dividing the fan base like never before.

Thankfully, one thing all can agree on is that the art is once again nothing but the best.

Director Rian Johnson gives an exclusive forward, explaining the process of how the art department work with almost every unit on a film to bring ideas and concepts to life, helping the cast and crew see what could be on screen.

The continued development of the new 'Star Wars' sequel trilogy shown here proves that the artistic talent behind the scenes is the best in the business.

With a huge amount of notes to accompany the art work, this behind-the-scenes book continues a rich tradition of giving fans something immersive to accompany the film. The crew make note of what their ideas were, and what the art reflects and why certain things work, and certain things didn't.

This could be the best thing to happen to a film with such mixed reactions; the unquestionable talent behind the scenes deserve the praise for bringing what we see here to life.

'The Art of Star Wars: The Last Jedi' is a Harry N. Abrams publication
