News: Amazon buy MGM Studios for $8.45bn

Amazon has acquired the historic MGM Studios for a whopping $8.45bn.

This will open up a huge new array of films and television for Amazon Prime subscribers, and of course lend such major Hollywood franchises to the Amazon belt such as the James Bond, Rocky and RoboCop franchises and the "classics" such as Singing In The Rain, An American In Paris and The Postman Always Rings Twice.

Thanks to Wikipedia, here's a collection of the MGM Studio's IP:

A joint statement reads:

"Amazon will help preserve MGM's heritage and catalogue of films, and provide customers with greater access to these existing works."

Senior Vice President Mike Hopkins of Prime Video and Amazon Studios, says:

"The real financial value behind this deal is the treasure trove of IP [intellectual property] in the deep catalogue that we plan to reimagine and develop together with MGM's talented team. It's very exciting and provides so many opportunities for high-quality storytelling.

Time will tell how this will affect future releases and their platforms for distribution going forward.
