Retired MMA champion Gina Carano was on the rise in Hollywood thanks to starring roles in films such as Fast & Furious 6 and Deadpool. But it was her appearance in The Mandalorian from 2019 as ex-Rebel shock trooper Cara Dune that turned most heads and put her front and centre in a galaxy far, far away.
Starring alongside Pedro Pascal and Carl Weathers, Gina became a fan favourite as tough-talking, no-nonsense soldier Cara who cut her way through the Empire in search of peace and freedom.
However Gina has treaded fire when it comes to what is acceptable on social media, putting her time in the show at constant limbo. Back in November 2020, her tweets about voter fraud and mocking the COVID-19 pandemic put her in the cross-hairs. Now, breaking in January 2021, her time with LucasFilm has come to and end following the following Instagram post made on her account:
Jews were beaten in the streets, not by Nazi soldiers but by their neighbors…even by children.
Because history is edited, most people today don’t realize that to get to the point where Nazi soldiers could easily round up thousands of Jews, the government first made their own neighbors hate them simply for being Jews. How is that any different from hating someone for their political views?
Since this appeared on her social media, it didn't take long for the call to fire Gina came in the form of #FireGinaCarano started to trend on Wednesday 10th January. Waking up to the news she has been dropped by her agency and also LucasFilm on Thursday 11th proves that social media can be a literally life changing tool if not understood and used properly.
A LucasFilm statement has been issued:
"Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future. Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable."
With such growing potential for Cara to explore new adventures alongside Din Djarin and Greef Karga, it now means there will be a notable void when Season 3 returns, but not one that can't be filled. After the finale of Season 2 helped end a large story arc, it will be a lot easier to wipe the slate clean for a new period of Din Djarin's adventures with new characters and worlds to introduce and simply allow Cara to have left his side to seek her own solace in the galaxy.
Disney+ are already in the pre-production stage of Season 3, and working on their new spin-off shows The Book of Boba Fett, Rangers of the New Republic and Ahsoka.
There is still much more to explore in the galaxy without Cara Dune it seems.
